Bhisham Sahni's Hanoosh

Plays written by Bhisham Sahni have many layers of truth that, every time, leave the reader astonished and anxious. Bhisham Sahni’s plays intrigue readers repeatedly as they attempt to uncover the truth within these layers. "Hanoosh" is one such play with different layers of truth about society, the struggles of the poor, and alliances between politics, religion, and influential people. "Hanoosh" defines the journey of a passionate, truthful craftsman against the atrocities and vandalism of society, prevalent throughout generations and relevant in the present time.

Through the medium of the play, writers have brought to light a universal fact: talent has no financial barriers.

"Hanoosh" is the story of a lock maker with an ambition to make a clock. His ambition is fulfilled after a trying period of seventeen long years, during which he and his family face financial crunch and many other difficulties.

Once the clock is ready, the royal court, municipal corporation, and the trade organization exploit him. However, the irony of his fate makes everyone think. On the king's order, Hanoosh's eyes are removed so that he cannot make another clock of the same kind. Once his dream is fulfilled, he becomes a victim of society. In this struggle against barbarousness, Hanoosh is joined by other characters like Katya, his wife, Emil, his brother, Yanka, his daughter, the old Ironworker, and Jacob.
